Turn the law in the light and every side tells you the same thing: cannabis is still illegal in Ireland. Here is what that means in practice.
Cannabis is controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Acts. There is no personal allowance in Ireland, not even at home.
A first possession for your own use may end with an adult caution or a referral to HSE health services, if the Garda chooses.
Convictions for personal possession start with fines. A third conviction can bring a prison sentence.
Giving, sharing or selling is supply, and growing is an offence of its own. Both are judged far more severely than possession.
Ireland has one of Europe's strictest limits: 1 ng of THC per ml of blood, screened by saliva at the roadside.
Available only on a consultant's prescription, under the Medical Cannabis Access Programme, for a short list of conditions.
Quick tool
Answer two questions to see how likely THC is to still be in your blood. There is no safe number of hours: this is a rough guide, not a test, and never a green light.
Answer both questions to move the needle.
THC from today, or from yesterday for a daily user, can easily be above 1 ng/ml. If a saliva test is positive, you go to the station for a blood test.
Regular use builds up THC in the body, so blood levels can stay above 1 ng/ml for longer than you think. Take the bus or ask someone else to drive.
An occasional user a few days later is less likely to be over the limit, but nobody can promise it. If you feel any effect at all, do not drive.
If you are convicted: at least a one-year driving ban, a fine and possibly prison. Refusing a test is an offence, and Gardaí can also charge you with driving while impaired.
Look after yourself
No. Cannabis is illegal throughout Ireland, and possessing any amount is a criminal offence in Waterford too.
It varies: a few hours for an occasional user, several days for someone who uses every day. There is no safe rule of thumb.
Gardaí can ask for a saliva sample that screens for cannabis and other drugs. If it is positive, you are arrested and a doctor takes a blood sample at the station.
Talk to your doctor about a Medical Exemption Certificate. It never covers driving while impaired, and you should not drive if you feel any effect.
Yes. Driving with THC above 1 ng/ml brings a disqualification of at least one year, even the first time.
